Politics, Business, war, corruption, greed, run abound in the head spinning thriller State of Play. Based on the BBC miniseries of the same name State of Play takes you through a story being un folded by street smart journalist Cal McCaffrey (Russell Crowe). On assignment for the Washington Globe, McCaffrey begins to investigate the death of a bright young assistant to Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck).
As the story begins to unfold, an affair between Congressman Collins and is assistant is revealed and sparks a media frenzy. Leaning on his old pal, Collins shows up on McCaffrey's doorstep, with his career in shambles and his marriage in question all he can do is sit tight.
With the news story rapidly being revealed, McCaffrey reluctantly joins forces young political blogger Della Frye (Rachel McAdams). Now with each of them taking new angles and revealing new facts, it becomes more and more clear that they are linking some top leaders of the country in this enthralling fictional tale which eerily parallels our own reality.
Teaching young Della a thing or two about true journalism they start collecting the hard evidence, in some cases even before the authorities can. Pressing deadlines keep Cal and Della running and the suspense rolling as they race against news deadlines to get this murder solved. But, is that where the story ends you might ask? Hardly, I'll leave the rest for you to see...
State of Play also does a great job of contrasting today's newspapers verses tomorrows Bloggers and the relevance of seeing news in print after the fact or catching it online as it's happening. We have become after all, a need to know it now society. With a packed cast that also includes Jeff Daniels, and Robin Wright Penn and Jason Bateman that steals scenes--and adds a bit of much-needed comic relief--in his small part in the film. This movie is very era fitting and yet timeless, and will be a great watch for years to come I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
