Nine is an adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2 only much better. Daniel Day-Lewis is superb as Guido whose lies to himself and to the women in his life have caught up with him. He is suffocating with the realization that everything around him is failing...his marriage, his career, his relationship with his mistress. And Day-Lewis makes the pain and despair palpable.
Oh, and did I mention it's a musical; a spectacular and wonderful musical with surprises from the actresses playing the women in Guido's life. Penélope Cruz is wonderful as the mistress, Her dancing and singing abilities shine. But she is not alone. Marion Cotillard as Guido's wife exhibits the pain of the numerous betrayals by her husband in an emotional portrayal. Nicole Kidman who plays Guido's muse has a wonderful voice.
The music is exciting and the dance numbers are remarkable. The "sand dance" is amazing.
This is a film of quality.
